When Rowan stumbles across an advert for a live-in nanny, the outstanding salary seems too good to be true.
Located in rural Scotland, Rowan can’t believe her luck when she arrives at Heatherbrae. The house is huge and kitted out with all the latest tech.
Desperate to secure the role, Rowan doesn’t realise her dream job is about to become a very real nightmare.
This is the first book I have read by Ware so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I had seen some very good reviews beforehand. When I began reading, I was hooked. I found myself devouring pages so fast and picking it up at every opportunity I had available. But somewhere around the middle I felt the story started to lose momentum and I became somewhat skeptical about where the story was going.
I didn’t think any of the characters in the book were likeable, even Rowan. The reader is aware from the get go that Rowan is imprisoned for the murder of a child, I didn’t have any empathy for her situation. Whilst this was clearly the intention of the author so that no one was above suspicion, not even the protagonist we have been told is innocent, I found it difficult that I wasn’t rooting for her.
That said I did enjoy a good chunk of the story, I was just disappointed that after such a flying and gripping start this book petered off and became repetitive and drawn out. Plus the ending left me with questions, which I particularly dislike. I think I would like to attempt another novel by Ware in the future, and see how that fairs before I judge solely on this offering.
