REVIEW: The Thursday Murder Club (The Thursday Murder Club #1) by Richard Osman

Every Thursday Elizabeth, Ibrahim, Joyce and Ron meet in the Jigsaw Room of the retirement village where they live, and try to solve cold cases the cops couldn’t. They might all be nearing eighty, but they still have a few tricks up their sleeves yet.

But when a local developer is brutally murdered, the friends find themselves right in the middle of their first live case. With their unconventional, and somewhat unethical ways, can these senior sleuths catch the killer before it’s too late?

Welcome to The Thursday Murder Club!

I’m often skeptical when TV personalities decide to try their hand at becoming novelists. However, I find Osman highly entertaining, so went into this hoping for a good result and I wasn’t disappointed.

I loved this book, it felt like a written version of the cosy Sunday evening television programs I used to watch as a child. Nothing tremendous happened but it unfolded nicely nonetheless and left me feeling cosily contented. It was very well written, and although it wasn’t laugh out loud funny it was quietly humorous which I felt far suited the tone of the book.

I found all the characters to be likeable which doesn’t often happen with such a large cast. But our sparkling septuagenarians far outshone the rest. All four protagonists each brought something different to the story, and I thoroughly enjoyed the dry, witty and sometimes cutting remarks they bandied between themselves.

This is a typical British murder mystery at it’s warm and wholesome best. I can’t wait to read the next instalment, which I have already pre-ordered, and I highly recommend.
