Sophie Mayhew appears to have the perfect life. Wife to rising political star John F Mayhew, they are the golden couple of government.
Although, John has a tendency to make silly mistakes. One of which might just see their carefully crafted world come crumbling down. Unless Sophie ‘the trophy’ plays her part in front of the press.
But Sophie has had enough of spouting the spin doctors speeches for the cameras, and instead flees for a coastal refuge that holds her only fond childhood memories.
There she finds herself part of a real community, surrounded by caring and trustworthy people for the first time in her life. But Sophie knows she must eventually face the music, and decide in which world her future lies.
I love Milly Johnson. She never fails to write a story filled with warmth and wholesome characters, and “The Magnificent Mrs Mayhew” is no exception.
I found Sophie to be a very endearing protagonist, and whilst her lifestyle is far different from most, her situation is still highly relatable. She has been overshadowed, overlooked and under appreciated for too long. The larger cast is mostly unlikeable, not including the villagers in Little Loste and John’s brother, Edward, who has a blinding seen that had me howling!
If you are a fan of Johnson this novel will be exactly what you are expecting, a well-written narrative filled with heartwarming moments and a good deal of humour too. It was the perfect, easy read to unwind in the sun whilst on my staycation. Highly recommend.
