REVIEW: Our Stop by Laura Jane Williams

Unless Nadia oversleeps or has a hangover due to too much wine the night before, she always gets the 7:30 train each morning.

Daniel really does get the 7:30 train each morning as he hasn’t been able to sleep much since his dad passed away.

When one morning Nadia sees a post in the Missed Connections section of the paper, that she thinks might be for her…

To the cute girl with the coffee stains on her dress. I’m the guy who’s always standing near the doors… Drink sometime?

…and so begins a journey of near misses and true love through the power of the written word. A journey to the rest of their lives, not just to work.

This story started off quite slow, and I wasn’t sure whether I was going to enjoy it. But I persevered, and I’m glad I did.

This is a heart-warming story, full of old-fashioned love letters and romantic gestures whilst remaining thoroughly modern.

The characters, especially the main protagonists, were refreshing in their normalcy. All their quirks and insecurities were highly relatable and therefore it was so easy to get swept up in the hope of their stories and empathise with their lows.

There was only one thing that grated on me a little, and although it was something very small it did prevent me giving this book more stars, and this was the continual references to feminism. Now, don’t get me wrong I love a good bit of feminism, but I like it inherently woven into a story or character. Unfortunately, Williams chose to highlight it in such an unconventional way that it jarred with the rest of the prose to the point it felt almost crude.

Luckily, despite the author seemingly using this novel as a way to prove how “woke” she is, I did manage to enjoy this story for what it was, a light-hearted rom-com that | would still recommend.
