REVIEW: Little White Lies by Philippa East

Anne White only lost sight of her daughter for a second…but then she was gone.

Seven years later Abigail has been found.

But upon her return Anne struggles to connect with her now teenage daughter, and she begins to question how much Abigail really remembers about the day she went missing.

Can the smallest of lies have the biggest consequences?

This book was gifted to me as part of a global book exchange, and upon opening it and reading the blurb I was pleased, it sounded right up my street. I’m a big fan of books in the crime/psychological/thriller genre, and this book was no exception. I was hooked on the story and intrigued from only a few chapters in.

With each chapter the narrative alternates between two POV; Anne the mother and Jess the cousin of Abigail. Although the chapters aren't short and snappy like a lot of books in this genre, the urge to read "just one more" is still extremely strong.

I was hard pushed to actually like any of the characters in this book, but that wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. As the mystery surrounding them all increased they all became shrouded in suspicion and I found myself unable to be taken with them. I did however empathise with them all. I thought East conveyed the difficulty of their situations extremely well. I felt so sorry for Anne, even though all was not as it seemed, she was struggling to connect with her daughter. Her endless trying was admirable and I felt all of her frustrations.

I’m really glad this book was picked for me, as it had somehow passed me by. I would definitely recommend, and look forward to reading more from this author.
