REVIEW: His & Hers by Alice Feeney

There are two sides to every story, which means someone is always lying…

When a murder occurs in Blackdown, newsreader Anna Andrews is unenthusiastic about covering the story. This means returning to the village where she grew up, which is the last thing she wants to do…

DCI Jack Harper is heading the case and he becomes suspicious that Anna might be involved in the crime. Anna is also his ex-wife…

Someone is lying. Are some secrets worth killing to keep?

I see that many other readers have written this, but wow - Alice Feeney has done it again! The complexities this author weaves into a story are amazing. Feeney is an extremely skilled writer, and she masterfully manipulates the reader into metaphorically pointing the finger at a different character every few chapters.

I am usually left feeling slightly deflated when reading crime thrillers, often suspecting the correct culprit from early on. However, with this story I went back and forth; back and forth; and then double-backed again, before being surprised at the end…well, mostly. I can’t say I didn’t have my suspicions.

As with Feeney’s previous novel, Sometimes I Lie, I found I didn’t empathise with any of the characters. In fact I didn’t even like them that much. This isn’t because they are bad characters, or not well written, just the opposite in fact. Absolutely no one in this authors stories are above being cast in the role of killer, therefore, utterly untrustworthy and not particularly personable.

Some of the themes in this novel are quite dark, and some of the subjects might not be pleasant reading for everyone, however, I like my thrillers gritty and twisted. If you do too, this is the one for you!
