REVIEW: Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah

TullyandKate… Need I say more?

This was a great coming of age story spanning three tumultuous decades.

This is the first book I have read by Hannah, and I have to say I really enjoyed it. It was everything I expected after reading such high praise for this author. The writing was absorbing and extremely poignant at times.

However, there was just one thing that really bugged me, and that was the lack of character development. The story went to great lengths during the first third, when the girls were teenagers, to show us how close they were by their united interest in striving for the same career. The childish ignorance that they would always want those things together. Therefore, once the college years and adult life saw their paths diverge I found it hard to understand how their personalities didn’t grow. Even by the end of the book, as a forty-something year old woman, Kate was still letting herself be pushed around and belittled by Tully. It was clear that Tully hadn’t learnt a thing from her experiences, as she was still utterly selfish and somewhat of a bully.

This for me was the one thing that let this book down, and saw it lose the possibility of a fifth star. I will however, look to read some other novels by Kristin Hannah as I really liked her style of storytelling.
