REVIEW: A Taste of Home by Heidi Swain

Fliss Brown grew up on an Italian fruit farm ensconced with the Rossi family who own it. But when her mother dies, Fliss discovers she has a family all of her own.

With nothing but a backpack and Nonna’s recipes with her, Fliss sets off for England to find her grandfather in the Fens. Upon her arrival she is shocked to find her heritage lies in fruit farming but one that has fallen into disrepair. Fliss is keen to get stuck in, and using her knowledge gratefully gleaned from her time with her Italian family she thinks she knows exactly what to do.

But will she be able to save the farm or has someone got other plans?

Ahh, hello Wynbridge my old friend.

I can always rely on Heidi Swain to deliver a story that I am going to thoroughly enjoy. One that I can read effortlessly, and I know will be filled with a lively yet lovely cast. As is Heidi’s MO, this book is filled with delicious descriptions of the area that made me want to go for a long stomp around the Fenlands, stuffing robustly red strawberries in my mouth as I went.

Unusually, for a book in this series or indeed by this author, it took me a while to warm to the main protagonist, Fliss. In fact, I’m not sure I really had even by the end; however, this didn’t affect my enjoyment of the story one bit. The supporting cast were a great bunch and of course it was wonderful to see a few familiar faces from previous books.

This was the perfect read to start the new year, even if the weather outside my window was no match for the glorious sunshine of Wynbridge. I can only imagine how lovely this will be to read after publication in a hopefully much milder and pleasurable climate!
