REVIEW - What Ever Happened to Vicky Hope's Back Up Man?

On the eve before her departure to travel the world with close friend Kat, 21-year-old Vicky Hope makes a pact with best friend Mikey. If they aren’t married by the time they’re thirty they’ll get together.

Eight years later Vicky finds herself waking up on her thirtieth birthday to a thoughtless note from her arty boyfriend of 7 years. Instead of the proposal she was expecting, he is dumping her for a younger model. With nothing to her name Vicky is forced to head back to the home where she grew up to live with her parents.

Sitting alone in her childhood bedroom she decides to contact her long forgotten friends and see if bridges can be mended. Shocked by the transformation of both she tries to forge new relationships with the pair, but unknown to Vicky secrets are being kept.

Can the friends really forget the past, and will Vicky realise too late that everything she ever wanted was always right in front of her?

Although I did enjoy this book it was nowhere near as good as others by Laura Kemp. I love to kick back and relax with a book of this genre, and for me that all depends on the characters and the comedy. I felt this book was somewhat lacking in both areas.

The main protagonists Vicky, Kat and Mikey (a.k.a. Vee, Kate and Murphy) weren’t very likable in my opinion. Vicky seemed aimless and weak, seemingly blaming the world for her life not going her way, when in fact she had been living in Brighton for 7 years pretending to be someone she wasn’t. Kat’s issues were more understandable but the way she dealt with situations was not. Therefore, I felt it difficult to empathise with her. Lastly there’s Mikey, he’s had a rough upbringing but on finally making something of himself instead of using this to do something useful he simply looks down his nose at the people around him.

I felt the story itself was a good one, most people can relate to falling out with or just losing touch with their school friends. I think had the characters done more for me I would have been more invested. Unfortunately, it turned out I wasn’t really that bothered how it turned out.

This was in no way a terrible book so don’t be put off if you like an easy read, it certainly won’t stop me from picking up more from Kemp. This one just didn’t do it for me.
