When Nina’s 15-year-old daughter Scarlett reveals that she is pregnant, no one is exempt from her scrutiny, not even her new husband. With Scarlett refusing to name the Father, other than that he is a married man who will take care of her, the suspects begin to mount.
But will Nina’s search for the truth tell her just as much about herself as her daughter?
This is the first book I have read by Brooke, and from the blurb it sounded like an interesting and gritty read.
I really enjoyed the format of the story, constantly skipping between ‘before’ and ‘after’ but running on tandem timelines. Unfortunately, I found it difficult to warm to any of the characters and therefore couldn’t summon any empathy for their circumstances. I also felt that the author made it too obvious from the outset who Scarlett’s secret lover was, I was really holding out for a twist that would prove me wrong but it never came.
It was however, an easy enough read and due to the structure the gathering momentum was enough to make me want to see it through.
