REVIEW - Baby Doll

Hollie Overton

When Lily escapes from the cell, where she has been held captive since she was 16 years old, her journey begins.

After the mental and physical abuse she has endured for the past 8 years she is determined to see her captor brought to justice.

However, it is not as easy as just returning home to her family. What lies ahead is an uncertain path.

Will Lily be able to reconnect with her family or will the future hold more hardships?

This is Hollie Overtons debut novel, and quite a remarkable one at that. Firstly I would say that the somewhat overused comparisons to 'The Girl on the Train' and 'Gone Girl' are inaccurate. I can't say at any point during reading I felt this resemblance. If I had to pick a similar title it would be Emma Donoghue's 'Room'. However I feel this novel is served an injustice in any comparisons and would stand alone perfectly well without any of its peers to hold it.

Fast paced from the minute Lily escapes I was gripped and couldn't help but keep turning the pages. The characters were likeable enough and each of their different coping mechanisms were interesting. I didn't always agree with some of them and on more than one occasion did find myself a little bit disbelieving, but who knows how they would react in this situation?

It was a well written novel and I won't hesitate to read more from Overton again.
