REVIEW - A Year and a Day

Isabelle Broom

When Hope, Megan and Sophie all find themselves staying in the same hotel in Prague they form an unlikely friendship. A

Hope has been whisked away on this adventure by her new partner Charlie, but is finding it difficult to really embrace this magical city when everywhere she goes she can't help thinking how much her daughter would love it.

Megan has joined her friend Ollie, who is researching the city for a teaching assignment, but for Megan it is a chance to relight her passion for an upcoming photography exhibition she is hosting. All will be fine as long as her and Ollie can remain 'just good friends'.

For Sophie this is one of many visits to Prague, but the first alone since she met the love of her life there many years before. Waiting for him to arrive, she wanders the streets reliving memories from the past and realising everything isn't as beautiful without Robin at her side.

All three women have a secret, but what will it take for them to be honest with their companions and themselves?

I was looking forward to reading this book having just visited Prague myself. I liked the premise of the story and thought it would be an easy to read book full of the usual romance and a little mystery.

Unfortunately this wasn't the case. Thanks to Hope's inner monologue we knew her thoughts from the very beginning, Megan's secret was barely worth keeping or mentioning and Sophie's, possibly the one with most promise, was obvious straight off the bat.

The storyline didn't hold much substance and at times I felt myself skimming parts that weren't wholly necessary to the plot. Apart from Ollie, none of the characters made me feel any warmth and therefore I felt a complete lack of interest in their outcomes.

However, the writing itself was good which is really the only thing that made me continue to the end, but I don't think I'll be picking up another novel from Broom in a hurry.
